One area where blockchain is growing is in records management. According to Franks (2020), the inherent characteristics of blockchain lends itself well to information records management. More specifically, Franks suggests blockchain is suitable for use in records management cases involving records archiving. One such application described by Franks in the U.S. is Beefchain. Beefchain is a blockchain solution that is certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This technology is implemented as a “Process Verification Program” where the Ethereum blockchain is used to create immutable records that are transparent and contain a digital audit trail as it progresses through the supply chain (from farm to kitchen). This will allow food traceability to ensure safety and quality of beef. According to the USDA certificate, Beefchain is certified to “Provide an objective foundation for monitoring and verification for the certification of cattle for client beef producers/feeders to meet:” followed by a list of requirements (Prius, 2019, April 25). Another area of IG where blockchain could transform future business is in identity management (IdM). Some researchers believe that due to emerging technologies such as 5G and Internet-of-Things (IoT), IdM challenges regarding efficiency and interoperability will increase because there will be more users, organizations, governments, services, applications, and devices requiring digital identification. Blockchain technology for IdM is a recent area of interest. One advantage of using blockchain is the decentralized authority and control characteristic (control is given to users) which has the potential to address concerns of data leaks and identity theft commonly witnessed in centralized management systems (Panait et al., 2020).
