Autoethnography
Autoethnography is the writing and research process (graphy) aimed at the self (auto)
and culture (ethnos) of people where it depicts their struggles in the face of adversity and how
they figure a way out and derive meaning from their struggles (Bochner & Ellis, 2006). In
light of this definition of autoethnography, I will pay close to the social situation and the
ethnic context as I write about the occurrences and my experience while teaching at the First
Nation’s school.
Writing an autoethnography usually takes the first-person voice and can be in the
form of journals, personal essays, photographic essays, poetry, short stories, novels, or fiction
(Ellis, Adams & Bochner, 2011). This helps the writer to heal, be motivated, explore
possibilities, fully transition to the present, or open oneself to criticism (Ellis et al., 2011). In
using this method of research, I hope to be able to connect my experiences, learnings, and
childhood to the present. It may help me realize my goal of enabling my students to connect
with their land.
Data Collection Method
There are research procedures that guide autoethnographic research. The first step is
data collection that is achieved through participation, self-observation, [and] interview[ing]”
(Chang, 2008, p. 4). In addition to the forms mentioned earlier, the information can be in the
form of narratives, memory boxes, field notes, personal-family-social artifacts, and
documents (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000). I have already prepared the fundamental details for
my writing.
Managing Data
O’Leary (2014) recommends six steps to organize data collection for effective
analysis and interpretation. They include:
1. Knowing a suitable software if needed, such as NVivo.
