Mental Health utilization for African Americans; a study of stigma mistrust
Background and Significance-Literature Review
African Americans are known to have a history of high mental cases than their White
counterparts. They have always had a unique niche in American history as influenced by
discrimination, slavery, and social and economic standing. Unstable mental health among
African Americans is linked to various historical issues such as resilience and their struggle
towards improving their mental wellbeing. According to Assari & Caldwell, (2017), "racial
disparity in mental health service utilization (MHSU) persists, and youths are not an exception to
the underutilization of services." There is a limited body of knowledge and research conducted
by a team of healthcare stakeholders to understand key risk factors fuelling mental health
services' underutilization among the Black youth and adults in the United States of America.
Despite some research indicating a correlation between demographic factors and the
social, economic status, and mental disorders among people of color, there have been limited
evidence-based interventions on how to address the skyrocketing issue of high mental cases
among African Americans. Having conducted a systematic review of the peer-reviewed articles
and journals, (Assari & Caldwell, 2017) opines that Black adults and youth are associated with
failure to utilize mental health services than their White friends. There has been a public health
concern of high undiagnosed cases and failure to treat African Americans' mental disorders. This
nauseating culture has created an enabling environment for increased instances of low upward
social mobility and diminished capital among the adult Black community members. There is no
doubt that African Americans have high incidences of depression, unemployment, and
dependence on drugs, among other issues.
