DQ1 – Refer to Figure 2 on p. 349 of Psychology and Your Life. Evaluate the Big Five trait approaches to
personality. Which personality trait best describes you and why?
After reviewing the Big Five personality factors, I feel like the one that best describes me is
conscientiousness. I really thought that all of the trait approaches fit me pretty well, especially
neuroticism, but conscientiousness seemed like it described me to the letter. In many situations, I'm very
careful to pay attention to detail, have patience, and do things right the first time, yet in others, I could
care less how it's done or even the outcome. I place a lot of blame on the military in regards to my
personality. Discipline is one of the traits that it instilled and amplified in me so I definitely have that. When
I'm around friends though, for some reason that all goes away and I become very impulsive and ready to
do the first thing that comes to mind. Organization is another trait that the military helped with although, I
had an "OCD" about tidiness long before I enlisted. There are very few situations where I can leave a spot
that is unorganized. It's just one of those quirks that I have.
DQ2 – Refer to p. 351–352 of Psychology and Your Life. What is self-efficacy? How does this affect your
educational goals and career goals? What is the relationship between self-efficacy and self-esteem?
Self-efficacy is the beliefs in one's personal capabilities. It underlies people's faith in their abilities to carry
out a particular behavior or make a desired outcome and generally leads to higher aspirations along with
greater persistence. This has a direct effect on goals and careers. Basically, self-efficacy determines how
high goals will be set based on a person's confidence that those goals will be met. If a belief is that it's
possible to graduate with at least a 3.5 GPA, then that would probably be a goal that is made.The
relationship between self-efficacy and self-esteem is based off of feelings. If self-esteem is high and the
person feels confident, there may be no limit to how high the goals can be set. However, if self-esteem is
low, chances are confidence is low also and goals will be made with low standards, if even made at all.
That person may feel like they can't do anything and not try for anything.
DQ3 – Review Figure 1 on p. 368 of Psychology and Your Life. Summarize two theories of intelligence.
Which type of intelligence do you think will be a strength for you in your current or future career? Explain
your answer.
Of the eight different intelligences that have been theorized to exist in everyone with each linked to an
independent system in the brain, one is called interpersonal intelligence. This deals with the skills in
interacting with others like sensitivity, temperaments, motivations, and intentions of others. Another
intelligence is logical-mathematical intelligence. It involves skills in problem solving and scientific thinking.
Both of these will definitely be a strength for me in the future. For my career, I plan on entering the
behavior side of psychology. That means I will have to have interpersonal intelligence in order for me to
read body language and understand the emotions behind it. It could also help me relate to people to gain
their trust. Logical-mathematical intelligence is something that everyone has to have. You might even
consider problem solving a prerequisite to almost any job because there are always going to be problems
and flaws. Using problem solving can help overcome those problems and think of new ways to make
improvements.
DQ4 – Review p. 363 of Psychology and Your Life. What are behavioral assessments? What are the
benefits of behavioral assessments? What issues might arise from being labeled as the result of taking a
behavioral assessment?
Behavioral Assessments are direct measures of an individual’s behavior designed to describe
characteristics indicative personality. Some behavior assessments are observational research, which is

carried out by observing people in their own settings. Another way is in the laboratory, under controlled
conditions in which a psychologist sets up a situation and observes an individual’s behavior. The benefits
from having assessments would be if you are being treated by a physician, it would make it easier for
them to understand what is going on with you as well as how to treat you if you need medications or
further care from them. Some issues that may arise from being labeled is sometimes society is not kind
to people that are labeled with behavioral issues. For example, I have seen numerous times, my nieces
and nephews that are labeled with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder) where there teachers see in their files that they have these disorders and they are
automatically treated differently from the other students. The teachers do not want to give them a chance
and ultimately, it’s the children that suffer.

I was surprised at the accuracy of the test results. I definitely relate to the results. I thought the questions
and possible answers were pretty vague. I put forth a good deal of effort to be all of the things listed
above because these are the things I value.
