Internal and External Validity
Internal validity and external validity relate to each other in the fact that they are
ideas that determine if the outcomes of research are meaningful and credible. There is a
small difference in what either of them entails. This essay describes internal and external
validity, how they relate to each other, and the threats that might affect internal validity
or external validity.
Internal validity entails the structure of a study in determining how successful the
research is. On the other hand, external validity explains the applicability of the study
results in our day-to-day lives. Various dangers affect internal validity. Attrition is a
threat to internal validity where some participants choose to leave a study, causing
biasness in the research results (Datler et al., 2013). Secondly, historical happenings can
change the way research participants feel about certain types of questions, affecting the
results of certain studies. External validity faces some threats too. One of the dangers that
face external validity is the situational aspect (Cuncic, 2021). The general results may be
affected by the venue and time of the research as well as the personal behavior of the
researcher. Sample features are a threat to external validity. This happens when the
findings of a research are affected by a specific feature of the sample.
In conclusion, internal and external validity are aspects that one should consider
during the planning of a study since they both influence the credibility of the study's
findings. Both internal and external validity face some threats which might affect the
final results of the research. Simplicity in countering the threats that might affect a study's
findings is the most important factor to consider while choosing a research method.
