The moderators presented various ways of understanding comprehension. To them,
comprehension is the understanding of a text or passage in any field. People read short or long
texts, but some cannot extract the deep meanings to inform their original thoughts or knowledge
about these texts. From the presentation, various issues feature, like activities to help learners,
how some panelists use different methods to make students understand better, reading skills,
comprehension strategies, and reciprocal teachings. These items are discussed hereunder, links
with classroom readings, and a reflection on the entire concept.
Activities used to help ELL students tap into their prior knowledge of a topic
One of the activities is teaching students about vocabulary and reading. In this case, a
teacher identifies what they wish the students to learn, allows interaction with words, and
identifies keywords to improve their reading. Doing this allows students to familiarize
themselves with the words before reading and understanding. Tutors use teaching aids to
improve understanding of concepts. Students who speak a different native language start with
cognates, words that are almost similar in spelling in two different languages, like a museum
(English) and moseo (Spanish). Teachers also offer extra help after classes to enhance
comprehension.

Ms. Gonazlez classroom at Webster Elementary School
She teachers both English and Spanish in her class by allotting equal time to the two.
Students learn both languages by building on a basic vocabulary then proceeding to complex
ones. Learning from the first language allows students to understand internalize concepts when
they come across them in English. It is the basic building block for the new language in
improving what they already know. Most of the students are confident when they learn new
concepts and relate them to their native languages. By doing so, they gain proper momentum to
grasp the concepts and develop their comprehension better.
The reading skills that transfer from the first to second language
Decoding is the basic way to make sense of a concept or language and then give it the
preferred meaning. Such is the first thing students do when they learn from the first to a second
language. They transfer conceptual knowledge through symbols from first to the second
language, making it simpler to understand a language. Additionally, learners grasp the cause and
effect systems of learning to improve their grasp and development chances. Experts note that
learning from the first to a second language is a way of transferring pleasure in a way that
improves comprehension.
Academic English in the Heritage Elementary School in Portland, Oregon.
The school has students from various backgrounds, some of who can speak basic English
or just a few words. Their improvement depends on how teachers handle their classes, most of
which teach a word at a time, stresses its meaning, and moves on after the pupils grasp its
meaning. They do so by using pictures, asking them to predict the stories they grasp a better
understanding. Most teachers choose to teach the words they believe will benefit the student
