Interview Author (Jeannette Walls)
Interviewer (I): "Thank you for being here today. We will explore the themes in your memoir
The Glass Castle and their relation to American civil religion."
Jeannette (J): "Thank you for having me."
I: "First, I would like to commend you on exploring struggles for independence, disharmony in
families, struggles, beauty, and religious beliefs. One of the elements of The Glass Castle is its
interpretation of The American Dream. As well all know, The American Dream is the belief that
all Americans have equal opportunities to succeed and prosper if they work hard and are
determined. How do you think that ideal plays out in your family's dynamics?"
J: "I believe my father's understanding of the American Dream was skewed. Even with his skills
of being inventive and adaptable, I think he did not subscribe to the idea of material prosperity. I
would think he was too idealistic to adhere to the prerequisites of achieving the American
Dream. And in any case, his alcohol stood in the way of his ambition. The idea of The American
Dream is only possible with hard work and determination, which is something Rex lacked."
I: "Americans are united by religion and faith. Rose Mary and Rex represent orthodoxy and
religious doubt, respectively. Do you believe such dynamics are typical in American families?
J: "Yes, I do. Rex's atheism and Rose Mary's Catholicism are common family dynamics. It is the
basis of society's conflicts. Religious observants and skeptics co-exist in all spheres of life,
although the former believe it is their duty to care for the latter, similar to Rose Mary's belief that
Rex was the family's cross to bear."
