MOVIE ANALYSIS 2
Brief Movie Summaries and Thesis Statement
Different films explore different sociological topics and theories. Movies are a tool for
understanding and considering the world around us. One of the main themes that movies have
always focused on is systematic racism and the related problems. Today’s society is
characterized by various groups of people called the minority group being subjected to this
form of injustice. Consequently, society has responded positively by finding better ways to
make their voices to be heard. One of the channels that society exploits to voice such concerns
is the film industry. This paper chose two films for the analysis of the social theories discussion
and exploration.
The first film is Just Mercy (2019). The film is a legal drama movie based on a true
story. In this film, the audience is introduced to Bryan Stevenson, who is a dedicated lawyer.
As a Harvard law graduate, Mr. Stevenson moves to Alabama with the intention and goal of
helping individuals that cannot get justice because of poverty. He knows that poverty deprives
individuals of adequate legal representation. He meets Eva Ansley, and they form Equal Justice
Initiative. Under this initiative, he travels to one of the Alabama prisons and meets Mr.
McMilllian, an African-American death row inmate. His commitment to service and profession
makes him work tirelessly to save his client Walter McMillian from death row. Mr. McMillian
has been charged with the murder of a white Woman Ronda Morrison. The film is based on a
true story that happened in 1989. However, society is still struggling with the events and
activities that the film portrays. It is a painful movie that can make any individual wonder why
McMillian was subjected to the treatment. This film is one of the few films that reveal the flaws
within the criminal justice system. In particular, the film portrays the cost of justice for the
minority groups and how long it may take for society to achieve true equality for all the society
members.
