ECONOMICS ARTICLE SUMMARY
Economics article summary
1. Article Summary
Authors Kim A. Weeden, Youngjoo Cha, and Mauricio Bucca, through their article "Long
Work Hours, Part-Time Work, and Trends in the Gender Gap in Pay, the Motherhood Wage
Penalty and the Fatherhood Wage Premium," the authors examined how changes in the social
structure and recompensation of work duration in terms of hours in the last thirty years are linked
to variations in remuneration gap among working, fathers mothers and childless men and women
(Weeden et al., 2016). The authors examined a sample data collected between May (1969-1984)
and MORG (1979-2014), a sample data restricted to non-institutionalized ordinary citizen
workers aged 18-64.
Through their article, the authors found a significant disparity among gender and
paternal/maternal status bracket in long working hours (above fifty hours every week), added to
sharply increasing wages per hour for long work hours, was part of the increasing gender
disparities (mostly among parents), motherhood wage penalty as well as fatherhood wage
premiums (Weeden et al., 2016). Their article cites that changes recorded by the groups'
representation in the part-time work are contrastingly linked to the decrease in the remuneration
amidst individuals in parenthood and those in motherhood wage penalty. However, it is
significantly higher amongst fatherhood premium earnings. The research findings offered crucial
hints on factors contributing to increasing wages based on gender.
2. Economic question(s) of concern in the paper
