1. From a behavioral point of view, describe why cognitive restructuring techniques might
be effective?
Cognitive restructuring is one of the core components in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy,
which Albert Ellis developed in the 1950s. Cognitive restructuring is used to change an
individual’s behavior which could otherwise be harmful. Cognitive restructuring techniques
encompass the use of different strategies and techniques that can help an individual to replace a
maladaptive way of thinking with adaptive thinking. The technique helps in eliminating negative
thoughts and instead of replacing them with more positive and insightful thoughts.
Cognitive restructuring can be effective because some of the harmful behaviors it seeks to
eliminate are associated with negative thinking, feelings, and actions. Nevertheless, when
individuals begin to rediscover themselves, they begin by evaluating their thoughts and getting
back to their normal self. The technique is effective because it minimizes the frequency of
irrational self-statements that could provoke the respondent component of harmful sentiments.
Cognitive restructuring is also effective because it teaches an individual to rehearse rules through
verbal discourse and maintain the behavior in the natural environment (Larsson, Hooper, Osborne,
Bennett & McHugh, 2016).
2. Do you think mindfulness and acceptance strategies should be used in treating behavior
problems? Why?
Mindfulness and acceptance strategies should be used in treating behavior problems. This
is because the two strategies put more emphasis on altering an individual’s relationships to
unwanted internal experiences. The latter encourages acceptance of past experiences without any
associated attempts to alter, suppress, or eliminate the experience. Again, the strategies widen
