CITY LIGHTS (1931) BY CHARLIE CHAPLIN 2
Film Review: City lights (1931) by Charlie Chaplin.
One fascinating comedy film of the 20
th
century is City Lights by Charlie Chaplin.
Charlie Chaplin is the star in the film. One social and demographic aspect that reflects in the film
is classism. Classism was a growing social problem during the era and it is played well at time
stamp 18:01 where the house manager stops Charlie Chaplin from sitting on the sofa. The house
manager also pushes off Charlie’s hand from touching him, which directly reflects how the low
class people were treated in the society. The scene also presents Charlie as a careless individual
since he does not fasten his belt as well as tuck in as required. The rich man also pours liquor in
his pants without him noticing, an indicator of carelessness. Another theme that is clearly
presented in the film is violence against women. This is shown at time stamp 25:17 where a man
beats a woman in public and hurls her down. The scene shows that violence against women was
a common phenomenon in the society since only few individuals rise to defend the woman.
One scene that stands out due to the use of camera techniques occurs at time stamp 24:40
where Charlie Chaplin is feeding on spaghetti. The camera man uses a long shot to capture
Charlie’s feeding behavior. In addition to the use of this camera technique, the camera an also
uses the tracking shot to show how Charlie feeds on the decorative papers hanging from the
ceiling (Rabiger, 2013).
