Task 2;
Part A: What is the application of SLP (Systematic Layout Planning) in designing a warehouse?
Answer the question by choosing any type of a warehouse and discuss the benefits of SLP to
your chosen warehouse.
What is the application of SLP in designing a Warehouse.
What is SLP?; Systematic layout planning is a way in which layout planning is made. There are
different stages in the process. This includes specific procedures which are followed, in order to
identify the rating and visualizing of elements and areas involved in a plan. When designing a
private ware -house the SLP model can be applied.
Private Warehouses:
A private warehouse can be defined as a location which is privately owned by wholesalers and
other manufactures. It is common for large scale retailers to own private warehouses for storage
and to production of goods.
Benefits of SLP to a private warehouse.
System layout planning can be applied in the processes of designing a private warehouse.
1). Design material flow pattern: SLP can be used to help decide which construction materials
are suitable for the construction site. For example, SLP planning would suggest that the materials
for the foundation must be purchased first before roofing materials.
2). Calculate requirement of equipment; In order to calculate the quantity of materials needed,
private owners are able to decide this depending on the capacity they need to construct.
3). Calculate space requirements; The plan for the warehouse will ultimately decide the
measurements of materials required. With the help of SLP, builders are capable of calculating the
size of the area space needed to set up the warehouse.
4). Consider building types; Most importantly, SLP can also assist one to pick the type or shape
of the warehouse

5). Plan work areas; SLP also allows the management of different working areas in the process
of building the warehouse. In different areas on the site a multitude of tasks can take place.
Part B) Assess at least 5 value added services a warehouse can provide to other businesses.
1). Financing
Warehouses require a lot of goods and materials in order to be built. Business owners can
typically borrow money against the security of the materials or goods in the warehouse.
An example of this can be seen when a Carpenter stores resources in a hired warehouse. The
Carpenter can typically ask for a loan from the warehouse owner in stake of the resources.
2).Minimize business risk
Business owners can store goods and appliances at their own risk. It is common practice for
goods to be stored at off-site warehouse. This will minimize the inventory loss from theft, fire,
damage, and other disasters. In summary this transfers this risk to the warehouse. In situations of
disaster or theft, it is the insurance claim and the warehouse insurance company who compensate
for all losses.
3). Price stabilization
Warehousing can be very beneficial. When supply exceeds demand on the marketplace, goods
are stored in the warehouse. Goods can be immediately released into the marketplace when
demand exceeds just-in-time production. Most warehouses are capable of holding consistent
stockpile of goods. As a result, prices of goods on the market remain stable. This is because
businesses are able to forecast production, profit and loss. In instances when the supply is too
high in the market, goods can be stored in the warehouse. This reduces product waste.
