Today many Christian teachings are based on various philosophical presumptions. In
fact, in Christian theology, philosophy has been considered a compliment to Christian
theological reflection. Because of the deliverance of both Christian theology and as supposed to
coincide, philosophy is used to explain theology and vice versa in some ways. First, philosophy
is used to convince those who do not accept divine revelation in Christian religious texts.
Secondly, philosophy is applicable, assisting theologians in explaining and clearing up
ambiguous theological teachings. These connections between theology and philosophy had help
Christians understand God and the nature of Jesus from a different perspective.
The first philosophical idea of divinity used by theologians in the middle Ages is related
to God's nature. For many years, God has been described using terms originating from ancient
Greek philosophy. Until today, God is still represented in such terms. For example, God is
described as eternal, transcendent, and all-knowing, among others (Austin).
One school of philosophy which tends to describe God is Monism. This is philosophical
view attributes singleness or oneness to a concept. In Christianity, God is defined as the creator.
From this perception, Christians believe that God is responsible for creating the universe. God
should not, therefore, be confused with his creation, but instead, he transcends it.

Perhaps one of the Puzzling religious questions that are solved by philosophy is the
trinity question. Christians believe that there is one God, with three persons- the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Spirit- each of whom is God. This doctrine states that there is only one God. It
claims that the father is God, the Holy Spirit is God, and that the Son is God. Also, it states that
the father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are distinct. This doctrine poses several questions on the
exact number of Gods. This problem is called "the logical problem of the trinity" or "the
threeness-oneness problem." Philosophically, this problem can be solved using a social model,
which suggests the analogy of society or the family. From this perspective, the Trinity persons
may be seen as just a single person in the same way family members are one. There may be
In conclusion, this metaphysical thinking was well spread among thinkers of the Greek
world and proceeded to the Roman world and the New Testament period. As the apostles start to
die, such thinking starts to infiltrate and affect the church. This was promoted mainly by those
who had been influenced by paganism. To stop creating a clear boundary between the extent to
which metaphysical thinking was used, church leaders then developed the concept of the Trinity,
primarily based on Ptolemaic and Greek philosophy. As a result of the influence, Christians
believe that God is the father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They, therefore, believe that Jesus
was the Son is an integral part of God.
