Table 1. Homeostasis.
Homeostatic
mechanism
disrupted
by running
a marathon
and how is
it altered i.e.
increased or
decreased
How is the
change detected
What
effector is
involved
What hormonal response
is provided
What would happen if
the response did not
occur within the
marathon runner.
Weight
Taking energy
drinks and
sweating.
Drinking energy
drinks shows that
fat is being
broken down in
the body and
needs
replacement
while sweating
indicates the loss
of excess water to
cool down the
body.
Sweat glands,
liver
Release of glucagon to
metabolize energy.
Break down of fat to
energy.
Release of thyroid
hormones which controls
the rate at which calories
are burnt, which also has an
effect on weight loss and
gain.
The runner would lack
enough energy to
continue the marathon
and this would’ve
resulted in failure to
complete the race.
Also, obesity and
obesity-related
disorders including
metabolic syndrome,
hypertension,
hyperglycemia, and
dyslipidemia can all be
caused by thyroid
dysfunction.
Heart Rate
Heart beats more
rapidly.
Heart
Release of adrenaline
hormone. These hormones
aids in the increase of heart
muscle contraction power,
the increase in blood flow to
working muscle (to a point),
the reduction of blood flow
to non-working muscle, and
the mobilization of substrate
molecules for use of certain
tissues. In general, the heart
rate and the force of
contraction of the heart are
both increased by
adrenaline. As a result, the
runner gets more blood
supply if you have more and
more contractions.
The runner would lack
enough oxygen because
the rate of contractions
would be low in the
heart their heart and
thus would not be able
to supply more blood
with oxygen which is
needed to produce
enough energy required
to replace energy lost
through heat and in the
muscles.
