In "Microsoft Begins Its Radical Shift to Software as a Service" (Orr, 2008), the author discusses
Microsoft's new software delivery model. How will this model affect the way software is
designed, built, and maintained? What special end-user considerations are there?
At first, glance this project appears to be an excellent idea; IT managers will be able to
spend more time helping people instead of spending hours doing maintenance on standalone
programs. However, taking a deeper look at the project called “the cloud”, which is a metaphor
for Microsoft's attempt to take over the world, could be considered foreshadowing of the
complete death of the Linux mind.
The way Microsoft Windows is designed, the average user never actually has to do any
computer programming. So the user is cheated out of the total operating system experience. I
think "the cloud" will do the same thing. It will steal any chance of a user receiving a total
Internet experience. Moreover, programming gives one the flexibility and authority over their
own machine.
