Introduction
Aspects culture such as religious beliefs and practices can have definite impact to
healthcare of individuals and populations (Latif, 2020). This is particularly true for Muslims
wherein religion significantly influences health care decisions, dynamics, and practices of
communities, families and individuals (Attum, et al., 2021). Considering the huge impact of
culture to various aspects of health of population and individuals, cultural competence and
integrating culture-sensitive perspective are vital in nursing practice. Cultural competence can
help healthcare professionals, including nurses, in understanding disease condition of a patient as
well as in designing interventions that respects and takes into consideration the patient’s cultural
considerations. It can also equip a medical professional with adequate skills to provide holistic
care that can significantly improve patient outcomes (Hernandez and Gibb, 2020). This paper
provides a discussion on the impact of a particular culture to health of an individual and the
impact of culture in nursing practice and profession.
The Culture of Hijab
Arab Americans constitute about 1 percent of total US population. Of these, about 10% to
30% are Muslim or followers of the religion of Islam. Islam has significant impact to life, beliefs
and practices of Muslims, including those related to healthcare. One of these is explicitly
portrayed in the video entitled “Cultural and Religious Beliefs” – the hijab. Hijab refers to
covering of the head and body worn by Muslim women. According to Muslim culture, wearing
hijab is necessary to protect a woman’s honor. As part of moral social order, a Muslim women is
prohibited from exposing her hair, arms, and legs to any young adult or adult male who is not her
direct lineage. In addition to wearing of hijab, other Muslim practices that have implication to
