Early intervention programs for Autism 2
Background
Autistic spectral disorder or Autism is a highly disabling developmental disorder,
characterized by challenges in communicating ideas, socializing, and performing day-to-day
activities. Statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that, as of 2015, approximately
164,000 Australians were suffering from Autistic spectral disorder (AIHW, 2017). Unlike other
disorders such as dementia which mainly affect adults and senior citizens, Autism affects people
of all ages and can be diagnosed among children as young as 2 years or less. Therefore,
understanding the prevalence, treatment options and impact of Autism on individual health and
wellbeing can help create long-term solutions and interventions for supporting children
struggling with Autism. This topic is important to social workers because autism has adverse
effects on individual health, wellbeing, and the prosperity of our nations as a whole. Late
diagnosis and treatment of Autism is not only less effective but is also costly and time-
consuming. This makes it important for us to understand treatment options that can be used to
deal with autism among children. Since individuals with Autism experience challenges in
socializing and communicating, they are susceptible to other issues among them drug abuse, and
violence. Therefore, understanding the characteristics and treatment options for Autism can help
protect these individuals from bullying and help them manage depression and other symptoms of
Autism.
PICO question

to speech therapy in improving communication, emotional control, and interpersonal relationship
