Philosophy Artificial Intelligence Response
When “it” wakes up, “it” will not be the woman assuming the information as presented in
the scenario. In the scenario, the woman does not retain any of her biological body parts when
the procedure transfers her consciousness into the robot. According to the biological definition of
a living being, all organisms must be made up of organic cells. In this case, the woman has lost
her identity of being a living organism so she can no longer be referred to as a woman. Instead,
she will be assigned as an object despite having knowledge of a living organism. Consequently
from a physical point of view, the woman will no longer “be herself”. However, from a
consciousness perspective, there are many assumptions that are not addressed in the scenario
which can impact the recognition of her identity in multiple ways.
Firstly, the scenario does not address if all of her ability to think, perceive, sense, and
form memories are copied into the robot. Furthermore, the scenario does not address where in
the woman is the source of her ability to think and have consciousness. For example, some
people say that we cannot feel with our minds but only with our hearts. Thus if the heart is not
transferred into the woman, then she is not considered “herself”. However, if we assume that the
source of all thinking and consciousness comes from the brain, and the procedure can transfer all
the information over, I would agree with Thomas Nagel who states that a being is conscious if
there is “something that it is like” to be that creature. In this case, the container for the woman’s
mind is not important rather their consciousness dictates their presence and identity.
I do not agree with John Searle who believes that consciousness is intrinsically a
biological phenomenon, so it is impossible to build a computer (or any other nonbiological

machine) that is conscious. This is due to the invention of mind games where players can control
their actions using their thoughts. In this case, the computer similarly accepts and executes
conscious decisions.
Another reason the woman will not “be herself” after the procedure is that even with the
memories and cognitive functions transferred into the robot, the woman’s mind will not work in
the same way. One major difference between humans and machinery is that humans tend to
forget information and are prone to cognitive errors but once information and programming are
entered into a robot, they will not forget. Thus moving forward, the woman will retain all
information with clarity. She would not be able to perform selective forgetfulness and will lose
some of her freedom when compared to her human form. Thus the difference in cognitive
functions will not allow the woman to remain herself.
The woman has not achieved immortality because any sort of machinery will not last
forever and the computer chip that stores her memory and cognitive abilities will also wear down
over time. This can be seen with our current computers and USB storage devices which can
malfunction and are susceptible to damage and wear over time. Additionally from a biological
perspective, the woman has not achieved immortality because her physical body and brain have
deteriorated. Another reason the woman cannot be said to have achieved immortality is that we
do not have evidence if the robot is the consciousness of the woman herself or simply a digital
representation of her.
In conclusion, I believe that computers have the ability to have consciousness with the
procedure but the identity of the person will change once their consciousness is transferred into
the robot. The woman will no longer be “herself” because from a biological perspective, she is
no longer a living organism. Additionally, the scenario does not state whether the computer chip
