Clinical Decision Support Systems
The quality of the decision support systems' data is important because it determines the
quality of decisions that professionals will use. The CDSSs use data from patients' histories and
other sources to enable clinicians to make accurate determinations only (Wasylewicz &
Scheepers-Hoeks, 2019). For instance, knowing the patients' pre-existing conditions like
hypertension and others may help determine the medications to give. Therefore, how accurate
such information is may determine whether the professional will prescribe the safe medication or
not. If the data that the CDSS system gets is wrong, for instance, if it fails to show that the
underlying condition may interact with a drug to cause adverse consequences, the physician may
give the wrong drug and cause harm to the patient. Therefore, the data used by the CDSS
systems should be reliable and high-quality to ensure that accidents and poor service quality are
avoided only (Wasylewicz & Scheepers-Hoeks, 2019). Ensuring the accuracy and validity of the
data is needed for both patients, professionals, and providers because it protects the parties from
adverse consequences that may affect them.
Clinicians ignore the alerts from the electronic health records for several reasons despite
the alerts being sometimes important and being meant to warn clinicians about various issues
among their clients. Among the reasons why clinicians may ignore alerts is first because of alert
fatigue. Alert fatigue happens because professionals have to deal with many alerts and yet in
many cases, the alerts are not even important (McGreevey et al., 2020). There being too many
alerts makes professionals tired and therefore causes them to stop responding to them. Another
reason for ignoring is because of the alerts being ineffective. In many cases, the ineffectiveness
of the alerts causes clinicians to prefer to ignore them and therefore focus on other things. For
instance, after responding to alerts that have no effects severally, one is likely to start ignoring
