Problem
Homeless young adults face a multitude of challenges and obstacles that include access and
utilization of mental health services. This leads to many young adults not receiving the proper
mental health care needed to problem solve and progress through life. The lack of permanent
habitation hinders this population from being able to commit to scheduled meetings with
resources in their communities, making it difficult for social workers and other professionals to
adequately service these individuals. The lack of services for these individuals creates disparities
that must be addressed.
Background placing the importance of the research problem in a social context and/or
service delivery
Homelessness in young adults is overwhelming. When paired with mental health issues, it can
be a herculean challenge for professionals who seek to alleviate this burden. Many young adults
who are homeless experience mental health issues either as a result or consequence of being
homeless (Schueller et al., 20119). Proper services are needed to aid this population in
connecting with healthcare and social services to improve their quality of life. Many barriers
exist in accessing traditional mental health services, leaving very few young adults, who are
homeless, with the ability to utilize any type of mental health services. Such barriers include;
misconceptions related to mental illness, self-reliance and finding no need to seek medical help,
low perceived need towards mental health help, and perceived low severity of mental related
illness (Schueller et al, 2019). Homelessness in young adults affects several aspects of their
lives. These individuals have been found to suffer more from mental health issues and substance
misuse than those who have permanent housing (Schueller et al., 2019). They are also more
