Varieties of Cinematic and Literary Evil in East of Eden Novel
East of Eden is a novel written by John Steinbeck who was a Nobel Prize winner. The
novel’s publishing took place in 1952. The novel shows the stories of two different families, the
Hamiltons and the Trasks. The characters in the story show display different features which
make them unique compared to one another. The book depicts several evil practices from one
character to the other. Each variety of cinematic and literary evil has common characteristics
with others. The essay aims at identifying and explaining the distinct varieties existing in the
East of Eden novel.
Evidence Subsections
There are several evil varieties which exist in the East of Eden novel. The varieties vary
depending on the character who committed them. The distinction shows that the evil actions
occurred in different places and can get related to the evils which occurred in the Bible. One of
the main evils that took place in the book involves Cathy killing her parents by burning them in
their house. Another instance involves Cathy neglecting her new born babies and husband. The
attack from Charles to his brother Adam is an evil act which the book shows.
Evil varieties between brothers
Another evil description which takes place in the book involves Adam’s attack from
Charles. The evil occurred as a result of the jealous which Charles had on Adams. For instance,
when Charles brough an expensive gift to his father Cyrus, he refused it and opted for the gift
from Adam which was a free mongrel puppy. The refusal of the gift from Charles shows that
Cyrus favoured Adam more than Charles and this increased the jealous Charles had on Adam. In
return, this makes Charles to attack Adam which leaves him unconscious. The act from Charles
is an example of an evil practice. The aim of Charles was to kill his brother Adam by attacking
him. The case between Charles and Abel relates to the scenario in the bible where Cain killed
Abel because their father favoured him.
Another incident which takes place involves Cal and Aron. The two takes the role of Cain
and Abel in the play where evil acts take place. For instance, Cal becomes jealous of Aron his
brother. Adam asked, “Do you know where your brother is?“No, I don’t,” said Cal. . . . “He
hasn’t been home for two nights. Where is he?” “How do I know?” said Cal. “Am I supposed to
look after him?” (Steinbeck 2376). The evil act causes the brothers enlistment in the army which
later causes his death. The act by Cal is evil because Aron is his friend and instead of cheering
for him, he becomes jealous.

The novel East of Eden depicts cinematic evil when Cathy murders her parents out of
hatred. The writer begins chapter 8 by explaining, “I believe there are monsters born in the world
to human parents. Some you can see, misshapen and horrible, with huge heads or tiny bodies. . . .
And just as there are physical monsters, can there not be mental or psychic monsters born?”
(Steinbeck 372) When Cathy turn 18 years old she robs, murders her parents and elopes form
home. Cathy’s parents died in a suspicious fire outbreak and then she disappears. Steinbeck
eludes that one night Cathy secretly goes her parents’ house and steals all the money from her
father’s safe. Additionally, Cathy sets the house on fire and locks her parents inside the house.
Cathy also pours chicken blood all over the house and makes her way out. Cathy’s parents’
house burns into ashes killing her parents because they were trapped inside and could not escape.
Cathy’s act of killing her parent indicates that she enjoys destroying people for her own profit.
Cathy’s evil and murderous acts are innate and begin at an early age. Cathy simply commit evil
act to benefit herself because she believes evil is everywhere in the world for people to submit.
Cathy’s act of pouring chicken blood is an act of manipulating people into believing that
she died in the fire. Steinbeck indicates that when people spotted blood all over the house, they
believed Cathy and her parents had died in the fire incident. Steinbeck explains Cathy as a
person that lacks empathy, kindness and has no atom of goodness in her. Cathy enjoys
manipulating people and take pleasure in destruction of others lives. The Ames house had gone
up like a rocket. The volunteers and the ordinary audience fires attract looked around at the
lighted faces, trying to see Mr. and Mrs. Ames and their daughter. It came to everyone at once
that they were not there” (Steinbeck 386). Steinbeck depicts Cathy as a physic monster as the
quote reveals how she murdered her parents. Cathy is evil because she hates her parents who
show her undying parental care. The film depicts Cathy’s hatred towards her parent through her
actions. Cathy runs from home to Boston but her father searches for her and brings her home.
Cathy’s father beats her and she becomes more respectful and helpful in the house. Cathy does
not recognize the good in her parents and uses their trusting nature to steal and kills them. Cathy
indicates a symbol of human evil that presents itself in the society.
Cathy shoots Adam and tries to kill her children
Cathy depicts her evil when she shoots Adam and abandons him in the desert with their
two newborn babies. Cathy also tries to kill her unborn children Adam nurses and cares for
Cathy back to health when Mr. Edwards beats and chases her from out of his to die. Adams asks
Cathy to marry him because she loves her but Cathy accepts the proposal because she needs
protection from Mr. Edwards. After Adam marries Cathy, she begins to show her promiscuous
nature. Cathy begins her evil acts when she drugs Adam and sleeps with his brother the night
after her marriage with Adam (Steinbeck 397). Cathy sleeps with Adam’s brother Charles
because she has an evil personality. Steinbeck explains that Cathy slept with Charles before
sleeping with her husband Adam. Cathy gets pregnant after her sexual encounter with Charles.
When Cathy finds that she is pregnant, she tries to end the life of her unborn children by
attempting an abortion. The abortion process fails and the doctor threatens to sue Cathy if she
tries another abortion. Cathy gives birth to twins raising concerns over her children’s fatherhood.
Cathy shows her evil actions when she decides to leave Adam with the new born twins.
Steinbeck explains that Cathy’s goal was to escape and leave her husband with the two infants.
Cathy shoots and wounds her husband badly on his shoulder when he tries to prevent her from
leaving him and their children. Cathy runs away from her husband’s house changes her name to
