Project Report 4: Exploring national values through bivariate analyses 2
PART ONE: CROSS TABULATION and CHI-SQUARE
Introduction and descriptive statistics
For this part, a cross tabulation and chi-square analysis was conducted to find if there was a
significant association between a dependent and an independent variable. From the General
Social Survey dataset, the independent categorical variable chosen was “SATFIN”. This variable
represented the respondent’s satisfaction with financial situation. It was categorized into three
groups (“pretty satisfied”, “more or less” and “not at all”) with its level of measurement being
ordinal. The dependent variable selected was “Happy”. This variable represented the
respondent’s general happiness. It was grouped into three (“very happy”, “pretty happy” and
“not too happy”) with its level of measurement being ordinal.
The table below provides the number of observations (n), means and standard deviations for
both the variables; “SATFIN” and “HAPPY”.
