Highway Engineering A Coursework Part 2
1. With reference to the Designer’s outline drawing (HDC/716406A/011/01), discuss the
factors you believe have been considered in the location of the access road shown.
Proximity to the area development site
This is a key factor that might have been considered when situating the access road. As it
is evident in the Designer’s outline drawing, the access road has been placed in close
proximity to the site. This acts to minimize land wastage (given that land as a resource is
a scarce commodity).
Ownership consideration and land sufficiency
It is the aim of any person to minimize the cost of investment. There must have been
considerations such that the access road does not or by slight magnitude cross the land
owned by others since it will call for compensation or individuals not even interested in
letting go of their land. To avoid such costs and troubles, I think based on the plan, this
consideration was in place.
Topography
From the topographical map, it is evident that the chosen location less steep compared
steeper compared to the other locations to the right and left. Assuming the soil is good,
this will minimize the cost of leveling.
Safety
The chosen location does not pose danger to other road users as evident in the designer’s
outline drawing. Like not close to a bend, good visibility.
Traffic interruption

It has been situated in a place such that there is little traffic interruption on the A64 York
road.
Environmentally friendly
The chosen location has no many trees.
Factor Not considered the presence of a bridge close to the junction
2. Discuss the factors that affect the capacity of a road such as the main A64 York Road
between chainages 0 and 300.
a. Blockages by parked vehicles, vehicles that break down, or are involved in accidents.
The vehicles may not be removed immediately thus preventing the flow of vehicles
for the time blockage lasts.
b. A U-Turn by a vehicle to move in the opposite direction, though it has a low chance,
will affect the road capacity by the time it takes the motorist to clear the bottleneck.
c. An off-street pedestrian deciding to cross at that point would halt the traffic. The
reduction in capacity will depend on the time it takes the passenger to cross the
physical bottleneck.
d. The presence of law enforcement personnel would significantly affect the street
bottleneck capacity. In some indirect ways, an officer is there to order overly-
blocking vehicles to leave the section in some orderly ways. These effects would
subsequently result in capacity changes
e. A vehicle slowing down at this section would significantly reduce the capacity.
Therefore, the capacity would be a function of the speed of the individual vehicles in
the section since no vehicle can overtake at that point in case of a reduced speeding
