FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES 2
Families and Communities
From the lesson on working with communities and families, it is evident that family
structures are different, and families encounter different situations. The family structure in the
current society is different from the past days. Teachers must be aware of varying family
structures and the family structures of their students so that they can handle some situations
involving families, especially with the early childhood learners. Regardless of the diverse family
factors, some cases are general in all families, and others are different (Buchanan & Buchanan,
2017). For example, when it comes to voluntary services in the childhood program, every parent
is involved regardless of the family structure. Family situations and factors can affect childhood
learning in various ways. Still, the educator should always find a way of making sure that the
learners receive quality learning and the involvement of family in the child’s developmental life.
Some situations face children as they grow up. We all don't choose where to be born;
thus, children's decisions are defined by their family and problems around the family in
childhood. Therefore, childhood educators have a significant role to play in a child's life and help
them overcome the situation and live an everyday childhood life. One of the issues is
homelessness. Many families suffer from homelessness due to parents’ job losses, divorces and
separations, and other factors. Homelessness dramatically affects children, and as a childhood
educator, it is paramount to have effective communication with such families. One way of
enhancing effective communication is paying visits to the homeless families and creating a solid
bond with them. I would also involve the family in the childhood programs activities where they
might network with other families. I would assure them that I will always be there for them if
they need help, such as food or clothing. This will enhance two-way communication.
