The Significance of exploring the subject of sexual orientation in Humanities
Sexual orientation is related to gender, and gender has become a hot-button issue in America
and across the world today, thus creating another moral view into the legal system (Lopez).
Within the political continuum, policymakers continuously attempt to promote their own
beliefs, while some are determined to champion equal rights to everyone, despite their
relations to their natal sex (Lopez). However, transgender is a tangled socio-political issue,
which has lower chances of achieving an entirely satisfactory solution as any matter of the
same characteristic. This has further been complicated through the intertwined effects of
religion, politics, and cultural ideologies around the topic (Lopez). Reports indicate several
challenges young transgender people face in life and the need to develop measures to help
them cope with these challenges. In 2017, New York experienced a trans rights protest to
push lawmakers into putting many efforts to establish rights for the youths and families with
transgender personalities. As it is the norm, human beings are better at clinging to their own
premeditated biases. This factor has contributed hugely towards the prevalence of
controversies over the rights of transgender people; worse, from marginalized communities
among which African Americans comprise the majority.
Using interpretative tools to Describe each of the selected examples, including an
assessment of their effectiveness
The first example was how transgender appears in visual arts; Ria Brodell's portrait of
Captain Wright. Ria Brodell is an artist and educator whose works are currently based on
gender, sexuality, history, and religion. The poem can be understood based on the context
that underpinned its creation; at the time of the painting, the issues around LGBTQ had
grown immensely, with several controversies around it, hence the significance of creating a
background story about it. The art is part of Rodell’s work, Butch Heroes, in which the artists

portray people who were born female but overcome the traditional gender stereotypes and
lived a male-based life. Unlike several others in the series, Captain Wright lived and died a
happy and respectable folk because he assumed his gender characteristic until death
(Brodell). Thus, when understanding the current struggles youths and people who come out
as transgender persons face in the current world, Brodell’s work becomes a significant
foundation for appreciating these people instead of fighting them.

The second example was an image of ballet dance, led by created by Jin Xing. Xing is
a contemporary transgender dancer and a cultural icon of Chinese ballet (Hamilton para. 1).
Ballet is one of the most common and gender-stereotypical dances, which, as a result, have
posed great challenges to transgender people wishing to come out on their sexual orientation.
By deriving meaning from the artist's inclusion in work, one can see the significance of
