Discussion Question 1
Read the section on Disney’s security operations in Orlando on pp. 206-209 of the text.
How are Disney’s security operations integrated into the overall business operations?
How are non-security personnel and environmental features used for security purposes
and how do security personnel contribute to the overall mission of the business
operations? Why is this integration of individual security components into the overall
security design and the overall business mission important?
Disney's security operations are integrated into their overall business operations in a
very intellectual, resourceful and remarkable manner. They have combined business
with generosity and vigilant preparation in order to, in a mode, "kill two birds with
one stone" They have established ways to handle dilemmas without hiring thousands
of security personnel to take care of the thousands of individuals which visit the park
on a daily basis. Disney has designed the park so that landscaping is has the ability to
act as a deterrent and a guide for the customers. They have in addition trained non-
security personnel to handle certain situations that would more often than not
necessitate security personnel. Their employees have been trained and educated to
observe any and every prospective concern and disseminate the state of affairs
before it becomes a quandary. This integration of individual security into the overall
security design and overall business mission is so significant since it clandestinely and
silently disperses situations and saves the business a great deal of money. Individuals
are sometimes diffused and never even recognize it. once these individuals do not
feel offended then they are happy. An individual is more likely to experience a
defensive manner towards a security officer or a locked gate than an associate with a
Mickey hat or a rose bush blocking an entrance.
Response 2
Disney’s security operations are integrated into all business operations by the implementation of their
security strategy by placing over 200 cameras within the 44 acres of the park, technology that includes
2000 alarms and using utilizing 1300 security personnel. The unique attribute that Disney possesses is
the inconspicuous presents of the security professionals. As stated in the text, 85% of a security
professional at Disney is public relations this can provide a calm and more productive environment
during confrontations. Disney not a only draws from their 1300 security personnel but the 50,000
employees at any given time; the idea to be observant during their shifts and providing public relations

that help elevate security concerns. “The control strategies are embedded in both environmental
features and structural relations. “Opportunities for disorder are minimized by constant instruction, by
physical barriers which severely limit the choice of action available and by the surveillance of
omnipresent employees who detect and rectify the slightest deviation. (Clifford, 2004) This strategy
uses the environmental features of the park for the purpose of security.

Discussion Question 2
Knowing that environment is important for security, what security factors would you
consider for two rival high school football teams that are set to play in two weeks on a
Friday evening? How would these considerations alter for an apartment building that
had experienced a rash of burglaries? Explain you answer.
If I were in charge of the security for a football team between two rival football teams
I would initially have the principals at both schools announce at the pep rally that
there will be a no tolerance policy for any violent or horrific behavior. Additionally, I
would have the principal permit the students to acknowledge the penalties of any
harmful proceedings. At the football game I would guarantee that there were plenty of
conspicuously marked officers so that they have the ability to act as a deterrent for
any bad actions. It would be different if I were in charge of an apartment complex that
had a rash of burglaries because a football game lasts a couple of hours so having a lot
of officers is not an issue. There cannot be masses of officers at an apartment complex
at all times. I would send out a flyer to the residents letting them know that there
would be hidden cameras placed all over the complex (even if only a few are
installed) and I would place signs up around the complex stating the same thing.
Furthermore I would propose a police officer (or two officers) free rent if they will
live onsite and observe and guard the property.
