Cerner Corporation
Cerner Corporation's CEO Neal Patterson send the memo via e-mail to the company's
managers to remind them of the need to keep the employees in check. Patterson wanted the
managers to be accountable for their employees' actions and the need to crack the whip on them
when need be (Wong, 2001). Despite sending a stern warning to the managers, Patterson used
an incredibly harsh tone and strong language that scared the managers and other stakeholders.
While he wanted the parking lot full by 7:30 AM and 6:30 PM and half-full-on weekends, it
was somewhat unethical to use the parking lot as a yardstick or measure for organizational
performance. Patterson wanted to inform the managers that he would no longer allow a
permitting culture (Calacanis, 2010). He went ahead to detail in his e-mail some of the
punishment that would befall the workers. Failure to abide by the requirement of the e-mail
would result in hiring freezes and layoffs, and the shutdown of the gym.
Patterson's scare tactics did not seem to sit well with the managers, employees and the
outside world. However, he was unsuccessful because the content of the e-mail saw the Cerner
corporation's stock took a significant plunge on the stock market. Nonetheless, to some extent,
the CEO was successful in creating a workplace culture that promoted discussions. This was
fruitful when he received over three hundred e-mails from the workers.
If I received the e-mail, I would feel unedgy and disrespected by the hurtful content.
However, I would reassure myself, calm down and recollect my thoughts before making any
move. I would then provide the CEO with my perspective about current work ethics. I would
also try to engage in a dialogue with the CEO and probably suggest an action plan different
from my boss's. It is always important to weigh one's actions and thoughts before replying to a
seemingly unprofessional e-mail.
