TARGET-ing an Existing Plan
Part 1: Evaluate a Lesson Plan
Lesson Objective(s): Students learn to summarize or synthesize literary or expository texts
while learning the message being communicated.
Subject Area: Language Arts
Target Group/Grade: 8
th
Grade Curriculum
Goals and Content
This lesson’s fundamental goal is for the students to write informative, and relevant
summaries of events, situations, and events. The lesson will entail introducing the summary
concept in class and explaining how it is different from other types of writing because they are
short and precise while they help developing comprehension. The lesson will also require
students to read short stories, such as news reports or novels, and provide their summaries to
evaluate their understanding of the materials. One weakness of the lesson is adaptation since
students will take time to get used to reading and analyzing stories or events. The strength is
internal motivation because the students will gain the needed knowledge to report and
understand events. The modification that could be made to make the lesson enjoyable is to use
exciting stories, events, ad situations to motivate students to read and summarize.
Task
The lesson’s main task is to read, watch, and listen to stories, articles, and events and
provide a relevant summary. The strengths are gaining the ability to read, analyze, and
understand texts and subjects. Reading long stories can be monotonous for students, which
eliminates motivation and their capability to learn. The best strategy is for the teacher to use
exciting subjects and stories to keep the students interested in achieving the lesson’s goal.
