In order to accelerate the sustainable development around the globe, one of the most
crucial goals is to bring end to all the types of discrimination that the women and girls face.
Eliminating gender discrimination is also the fundamental human right. Throughout history,
women empowerment has proven to be of high significance placing a multiplier effect on the
growth and development of the economy. Gender discrimination is one of the excruciating
causes that leads to the violation of other basic rights for the person like the right of speech,
expression and even education. In order to ensure peace, prosperity and tranquility in the world,
gender equality and women empowerment can be termed as the necessary foundation that would
benefit the economies as well as the societies and also the overall human race (Bendl, &
Schmidt, 2012). The paper aims at identifying how well the sustainable development goal i.e.
gender equality and girl and women empowerment has been implemented and what steps need to
be taken to ensure that the goal is fulfilled effectively in the future.
The United Nations Development Program, along with its other UN partners has made
gender equality their central mission since 2000. In comparison to two decades ago, more girls
now attend schools and most of the geographical regions have reached the goal of gender parity
in terms of primary education. In comparison to the 35 percent in 1990, now, the statistics show
that women make up to approximately 41 percent of the total paid workers apart from agriculture
(UN Women, 2015). Considering these achievements, the aim of the SDGs is to ensure that
discrimination against the girls and women everywhere can be ended. Despite the progress under
the Millennium Development Goals where equal access is ensured to both boys and girls
regarding primary education, the girls and women still face violence and discrimination around
the globe (Weintraub, Rosenberg, & Wachter, 2016). Along with education, the girls and women
