Before Stonewall
Introduction
Before Stonewall is a documentary film that talks about the history of the LBGTQ community
before the Stonewall Riots took place. It is considered the first recorded visual history of queer
life before Stonewall. The documentary utilizes archival films and personal recollections to
construct an informative film that unfolds the history of LGBTQ liberation movements in the
United States. The documentary made by John Scagliotti, Greta Schiller, and Robert Rosenberg
is based on the Stonewall riots. However, the documentary recognizes the social changes that
began before the Stonewall riots. The Stonewall riots, also referred to as Stonewall Uprising,
took place on 28th June 1969 when Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village in New
York, was raided by the New York Police. The police raid resulted in 13 arrests that included the
club employees and individuals the police considered to violate New York’s gender-
appropriation clothing statute (History.com Editors). The arrests sparked a riot and a six-day
protest, with law enforcement clashing violently with bar patrons and neighborhood residents.
Before Stonewall documentary provides the encounter of the Stonewall Uprising and how the
event was a catalyst for the LBGTQ rights movements.

into people and society (Nichols 20). Documentary production is based on five modes:
