Drug labels for prescription medicines provide important information on safe and proper
medication use. Consumers should always read drug labels to make sure they are taking
medication correctly and safely as well as to learn about possible side effects. More than half a
million Americans misinterpret prescription drug labels each year, according to Consumer
Reports. Understanding prescription drug label instructions is critical for safe medication use
There are 7 items found on prescription labels that consumers must make sure they
understand to ensure they are following consumer safety guidelines. 1.pharmacy name & address
2. Who the prescription is for. 3. serial number of the prescription 4. Quantity in container
5. Brand name 6. prescriber's name 7. directions for use and any cautionary statements
contained in the prescription
Every consumer taking medication has what's called 8 ‘rights’ to safe drug
administration. These were established to reduce the risk of medication errors and harm to
patients. Following these 8 rules, every single time will ensure patient safety.
1. The right patient: Confirm the patient’s identity by checking two patient identifiers.
2. The right drug: Check the drug label and verify that the drug and form to be given is the
drug that was prescribed.
3. The right dose: Verify that the dose and dosage form to be given are appropriate for the
patient, and check the drug label with the prescriber’s order.
4. The right route: Verify that the route by which the drug is to be given is specified by the
prescriber and is appropriate for the patient.
