Computer Crime and its Impacts.
Computer Crime and its impact
In this computing era, a new wave of criminals has been born. This criminal commits accts
entirely online or crimes in which one component is done in assistance of a computer or electronic
device. The United States of America Department of Justice (DOJ) define cybercrime as crimes in
which computer devices is the target, used as a weapon to commit the crime and computer is used
as an accessory to the crime (Brush,2019). The availability of verse internet connection all over
the world has sped up the intensity of cybercrimes since these criminals no longer need to be
physical in their targets premises to commit these crimes (Brush, 2019). Internet convenience,
speed, ability to make someone anonymous, and able to make a world with over 4 billion people
and organizations have made the following crimes possible. Below are examples of these crimes
and their impacts:
A ransomware attack is the first computer cybercrime rampant in this computing age.
Hackers gain unauthorized access and exploit a computer, computer systems, and networks and
demand payment of ransoms for them to give back control of the system to the individual or
organization. These hacking activities have impacted organizations since they are done with people
or groups with advanced computing knowledge and supercomputers in terms of processors and
speeds. In May 2021 a hackers group “Dark Side" shut down the operation of the Colonial pipeline
company on the USA South Coast through a ransomware attack (Osborne 2021). This of course
led to losses of millions of dollars and panic amongst the company's clients.
Software piracy is the second type of cyber-crime. Software piracy is the unlawful
simulation, sale, public distribution, and use of programs and software's created for specific use or
sale by organizations. These crimes involve violation of trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
