Essay Question 2:
Some people argue that Buddhism is not a religion, but actually a philosophy. It is
difficult to decide for everyone, what Buddhism is exactly. The religion of Buddhism is practiced
by a variety of cultures in many different ways. Although this is the truth, if we are referring to
the basics of Buddhism, when this practice first started, I believe that Buddhism is a philosophy,
and a way of life, as opposed to a religion.
I am responding to the fifth question under essay #2 requirements. I completely agree the
Buddhism is a philosophy rather than a religion. In my previous response essay, I explained this
idea briefly. Although Buddhism, is defined in our lectures as a religion of enlightenment, I do
not believe that it is a religion at all, but instead it is a philosophy and way of life for people.
Religion refers to a belief system in which a higher power in worshipped and believed to be a
creator. Buddhism, however, does not believe nor worship a higher being. In none of the
practices nor scriptures has the idea of a deity been introduced nor developed. The entire purpose
of Buddhism, instead, is to end all suffering with the understanding that suffering comes directly
as a consequence from having pleasures, especially ones that are materialistic. If Buddhism were
to be a religion, the followers of Buddhism would pray, worship, and believe in Buddha as a
God, instead of what it is, a name for individuals who have reached nirvana. Although some
individuals believe that Buddhism is a philosophy, others argue that is it not.
In the religion of Buddhism, people believe in Samsara. The idea of Samsara is that
‘wandering’ through reincarnations is what causes more suffering to people. Reincarnation is not
an idea that comes from philosophy, but instead religion. This is because reincarnation does in
fact have to do with afterlife, which is connected to a higher being controlling the reincarnation.
While all of this is true, it is just an idea and the reincarnation in Buddhism is not actually related
