JOINTS OF THE SKELETON
The joint or articulation is the junction between two or more
bones regardless of the actual movement it permits.
The joints of the body are classified according to the degree
and types of movements they perform.
1. Fibrous or Immovable
2. Cartilaginous or Slightly movable
3. Synovial or freely movable
TYPES OF JOINTS
Fibrous Joints- It is the type of joint where bones are
not movable. Here the connecting medium between the joints
is fibrous tissue.
The articulations of the skull bones are typical of the fibrous
joint, known as suture. Following are the examples of sutures;
Coronal Suture that joins the frontal and parietal bones of
the skull.
Lambdoid Suture that joins both the parietal bones with
the occipital bone of the skull.
Saggital Suture is the joint between two parietal bones of
the skull.
Teeth in the socket is an example of peg and socket joint.
Tibio-Fibular joint (Synchodrosis) is also a type of fibrous joint.

Cartilagenous Joints- It is the type of joints where the
bones are movable. The opposed surfaces are covered with the
hyaline cartilage and they are connected by the bands of white
fibrous ligaments or by disc of fibrous cartilage.
Following are the examples of cartilaginous joint;
The joint between the manubrium sterni and the body of
the sternum.
Pubic joint by which two pubic bones are joined together
in the pelvis.
Intervertebral joints with fibrocartilage in between every
two vertebrae of the vertebral column.
Temporary joints present between the diaphysis and
epiphysis of long bones.
Synovial Joints- It is the freely movable joint.
Characterstics of a Synovial joint are;
The opposed bony surfaces are covered with an articular
cartilage. However these cartilages are not attached to each
other.
There is a cavity around the joint called synovial cavity.
The synovial cavity is surrounded by a ligament or capsule
The cavity is filled with a fluid called synovial fluid which
lubricates joint.
Synovial membrane covers all around the cavity.
