Childhood pregnancies are a global problem mostly affecting people in low, middle and low
income countries including Kenya. This is seen in marginalized communities due to poverty,
lack of education and lack of employment opportunities more likely in Bungoma County
communities. Childhood pregnancy, also known as adolescent pregnancy is a pregnancy carried
out in female under the age of 18 years. This comes along with low birth weight, premature
labor, and anemia-pre-eclampsia that is connected to biological age after observed in teen births
even after being controlled for other risk factors for example prenatal care.
Approximately 98% of births to girls aged 10-18 in developing communities from Bungoma
occur within early marriage and this is caused by no access to contraception and pressure on to
prove their fertility. This childhood pregnancy is caused with various factors like sexual
violence, inadequate access to services tailored to young girls, lack of education, dropping out of
school, early and forced marriage, community and social pressure to marry. This is shown below,
