Historical Development of Adult Education in America
The adult education in America was specially designed to cultivate good citizenship, and
basic literacy, so that all people could make adequate participation in important decisions of the
country. Reading and writing were closely associated with the comprehension of the bible, thus
the program also had a religious emphasis. Adult education in America had a religious and
political interest.
The Junto -1700s
Apprenticeships were the earliest form of adult education in the 1700s. During the
colonial period, these programs trained the colonies on trade and art by allowing the people to
work closely with the trained masters for a few years. They would learn to read and write from
the rulers. Benjamin Franklin is regarded to have introduced American adult education activities
in the 18th century. He formed the Junto, a small society for study and discussion, in 1727. The
Junto was active for 30 years and comprised of twelve people (Lumsden, 1985). They met
weekly, to debate on the social considerations in the community. Despite exhibiting an
intellectual orientation, Junto was primarily interested in the matters that affected Philadelphia.
Nevertheless, it influenced the foundation of libraries that availed printed material to the locals.
Junto also spearheaded the formation of the American Philosophical Society.
Lyceum -1800s
Approximately a century after Junto had been established a new program for adult
education, Lyceum, was established. Lyceum was popularly a series of lectures that familiarized
the rural and small-town adult inhabitants with scholarly knowledge. It targeted the adults that
had not gone through the elementary education entirely; consequently, the movement fervently
