Fences film is widely acknowledged as a poignant explanation that addresses what life
means to different people. It surpasses the mere race relations, which the American society has
applauded throughout history. This essay discusses Structural Family Therapy, as seen through
the lens of ‘Fences’ Film.
Troy Maxson is the protagonist in Fences movie. He is an African American man
working in the sanitation department, where he loads garbage into trucks. Despite showing
exceptional athletic abilities while he played in the Negro Leagues, he could not be accepted into
the Major League because he was black. He is considered hardworking and robust. However, he
is known for whimsical tales and twisting the reality. He is also the head and primary source of
income for his family, a thing that makes him proud. His character is the center at which every
other relationship in the film revolves around. He is the father of Raynell, Cory, and Lyons. In
spite of his hard work for years, he is depressed over the little growth he has made in life,
especially that he is unable to love and support his close family members, as he would have
desired. His son Cory is an ambitious, respectful, and compassionate person. Troy’s wife, Rose
Maxson, is a homemaker, and committed church member. She greatly loves her family, which is
manifested when she requested her husband and son to build a fence around their backyard. The
fence symbolically means her desire to keep her family close to her. Rose is realistic and has
confidence in her son, Cory.
Living close to the family is Troy’s brother, Gabriel Maxson. During the Second World
War, he picked a head injury while serving as a soldier. Consequently, he receives some benefits
from the government to compensate for his damage. Troy used his brother’s checks to buy a
