FEMINISM AND ISLAM 2
Feminism and Islam
Feminism refers to the action of advocating strongly for the rights of the female gender
on the basis of equality (Walby, 2011). This is because women believe that they have equal
rights like men. Gender equality should be upheld. This is should be seen in the representation in
international organizations. Women should also have a say on the policies of the organizations as
well. Decisions made in the organizations have impacts on both men and women hence female
gender should be treated with dignity. Feminism has been there since the beginning of the 19
th
century. This was when women formed a movement to stand for the rights of the women. The
movement has been evolving since then in liberating the oppressed women in the society. It is
appropriately concerned with the needs of the female gender.
The use of language sensitive words in addressing various titles of different professions is
one of the major developments that have emerged from the feminist’s actions and their continued
struggle for their rights and privileges. Feminism has both the positive side and the negative side
(Walby, 2011). The positive side is that it empowers women and girls hence make them feel that
they are capable of what men achieve. This makes them maximize on their potential. Women are
supposed to have every right to do whatever they feel is morally appropriate and acceptable to
all. This has brought about women enjoying privileges like the rest. Their opinions are put into
consideration. Women now have the right to work in any profession and also to participate in
voting when it comes to any elections. Feminism has helped women play a better role in business
firms and organizations too (Delmar, 2018). It has brought issues of interests in the minds of
scholars who are on the side of women. This has been queries which feminists try to figure out
their answers. Nongovernmental organizations are now trying so hard to advance the status of
women since they have been looked down upon for many years.
