Writing at the Doctoral Level
Servant leadership can be described as leadership where the leader’s main goal is
to serve (Yang et al., 2017). The concept of servant leadership is thousands of years old and is
typically assumed to be a Christian idea. However, Gandolfi and Stone (2018) suggests that this
is false and that the teachings of Confucius and aspects of the Zhou Dynasty show signs of
servant leadership. Three levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy will be used to form a better picture of
servant leadership.
Create
In order to use servant leadership effectively, a leader must create and encourage
creativity (Hoover & Douglas, 2018). Fostering creativity among an organization and its
employees leads to effective communication and solid bonds between and within teams (Yang
et al., 2017). Furthermore, servant leaders that create these opportunities for their employees
”are more likely to enable employees to feel competent and perform well at given tasks
including creative tasks, thereby increasing creative self-efficacy” (Yang et al., 2017, pg. 614).
This self-efficacy leads to a positive relationship between leader and employee (Yang et al.,
2017). A good servant leader must also design and create opportunities for employees or teams
to participate in their own development (Hoover & Douglas, 2018). These opportunities can
lead to strong connections between employees’ personal growth and the growth of the
organization (Hoover & Douglas, 2018).
Effective strategic leaders must also create a level of trust as well as a small power
distance with their employees (Yang et al., 2017). When a team has a large power distance,
they are less likely to interact and exchange idea with their team leaders. However, trust and a
small power distance can lead to more informal and relaxed workplace (Yang et al., 2017). This
can also encourage more participation. ”Thus, when a team is characterized by small power
distance, team members become more willing to accept the servant leadership approach and
