Health APP for Preventing Cardiovascular Disease
Please complete and submit a one to two- page summary of the Health app you have selected and
explain how it can help address the health issue you previously identified.
In Course Project Milestone 1, the issue of cardiovascular disease (CVD), as the leading
cause of death for men, women and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the USA was
discussed. Obesity is among the leading causes of elevated cardiovascular disease (CVD)
mortality and morbidity. In the USA childhood obesity remains a serious problem. In the U. S.
the prevalence of obesity was 18.5% among U. S. youth in 2015-2016, affecting about 13.7
million children and young people according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
To combat this problem, the rebranded Weight Watchers Company released a mobile app
(The Kurbo by WW), to help kids and teens between 8-17 years reach a healthier weight.
Guidance was derived from the Stanford University Pediatric Weight Control Program and the
app focuses on sustainable healthy eating and mindfulness habits. The app includes a traffic
light-like feature that gives a green light for healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables; a yellow
light for foods kids should limit, such as dairy, whole grains and lean protein; a red light for
unhealthy foods such as candy and sugary drinks that they shouldn’t consume frequently.

Through this commercial program, Kurbo, weekly individual coaching is provided via video chat
to kids and teens and parents as well as recipes and shopping lists for parents. Health behaviors
are self-monitored through the mobile app.
The researchers Cueto, Wang and Sanders (2019), carried out a study to determine the
effectiveness of the app., by examining the association between engagement and change in
weight status. The primary outcome, engagement, was defined as the total number of health
coaching sessions received. The secondary outcome was change in weight status, defined as the
change in BMI as a percentage of the 95th percentile” (Cueto, Wang, & Sanders, 2019).
The outcomes were compared at 4 weeks, 12-16 weeks and 24 weeks. There were 1120
participants, between ages 5-18. The mean age was 12 years and the BMI 96.6 percentile. Sixty
eight percent (68%) of the participants were females. The study took place between March 2015
and March 2017. The median coaching sessions received were 8 (3-16) for the 4-week group, 9
(5-12) for the 12- to 16-week group and 19 (11-25) for the 24-week group.
The results of the study concluded that among overweight and obese children using the
app, increased engagement was associated with longer voluntary commitment periods. Increased
number of coaching sessions was associated with decreased weight status. The app was therefore
determined to be a successful tool for weight loss and therefore for reducing the number of teens
with obesity and therefore should support lowering of cardiovascular disease in adults.
