b) In groups, students will work on the following tasks using online resources -
i. Select an industry at students’ choice as the subject for this assignment (Students
should use the Industry of the company they selected in Assignment 1).
ii. Research online (must use APA citations) on the selected industry and compile the
necessary information that will address the following categories:
iii. Part 1 Industry Research (research and discussion must be focused - max 3
pages plus charts)
1. Conduct research on the industry of your chosen company and present an
overview of the current outlook for that industry in the Canadian market. Your
work must include a combination of text and data analysis (e.g., findings
presented in Excel charts or tables, no mark can be given to any copy and
paste of tables). Your work must cover the following sections:
a. Key players as per updated Porter Model (see video “Industry Analysis-
Part 1”) – name player type, give 3 examples of these players for your
industry (name and very short description of the business one
sentence per player).
b. Growth of your industry (positive or negative, present data for 5 years,
analysis interpretation of what the data shows. No analysis/data no
mark)
c. Trends that specifically relate to your industry:
Technology/Environment/Economy/Social Trends/Political
forces/Regulations (1 trend per type).
2. Summary and conclusions short discussion 1-2 sentences (Hint: Is it a
favourable/unfavourable situation for your company (in terms of opening a
new store/branch/shop)? Perform SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses,
threats and opportunities).
iv. Part 2 GIS and Sources of Information
1. Define Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping technology.
2. How it is used in different industries (include your industry and 2 other
industries).
3. Why would it be used for selecting an appropriate site for a business (in your
industry, provide 5 reasons, also incorporate concepts of marketing
segmentation).
4. Identify steps on how you would implement GIS for your chosen company (at
least 5 steps).
