A Complicated Kindness
The Complicated Kindness is Miriam Toews’s narrative retold the story of Nomi Nickel,
the 16 years old narrator. She has a series of the problem. Her family has abandoned her. Her
lover has also dumped her while the community shuns her. They live alone in the empty house
and recount her problems while she dreams of the happiness she has lost. Her hometown is
Manitoba, an East Village that is populated by the Mennonites, the strict Christian sect. The
Mennonites started to arrive in North America in the 17th century while the biggest wave of
immigration occurred in the 19th century and after the beginning of the First World War. The
Prussian Mennonites who had found refuge in the tsarists Russian moved to the Soviet Union.
The East Village is a place that is reserved. It is a place of no happiness due to the strict
measure put up by the Puritans. There is no bar or train. The prospects in the town involved
slaughtering of chicken business at the Happy Family abattoir or just churning butter to attract
tourist. The village is high on rules. There is no dancing, drinking, or recreational sex. There is
no staying in the city past nine o’clock. "Individuals here just can hardly wait to pass on, it
appears. It is the major thing. The main reason people are not all snuffed during childbirth is on
account of that it would eliminate our anguish by the lifetime. My direction advocate has
recommended to me that I change my state of mind about the place and figure out how to love it.
I do, I said to her. Goodness, that is rich, she said. That is rich" (Mattisson, 2007) From the
outset of the novel Nomi lives with her father, Ray, in the house, which is almost empty; as her
father consistently sells the furniture one by one. Her father is the sweet person though he is an
unfortunate teacher. His love is unconditional; however, he has very poor parenting skills, which
causes her to neglect Nomi. The two deals with their incapacities in many ways. Ray is a
