The novel Grapes of Wrath is a novel written by John Steinbeck in the 1930s during the Great
Depression period. With the help of characters such as Tom Joad and Jim Casy, I will explain the
challenges that most Americans faced during the Great Depression period, where jobs were lost,
companies collapsed, and banks were forced into foreclosure. I will also expound on the troubled
life of Tom Joad and his family (Bloom).
In the novel, I get to see how Tom is a kind man, even though he gets irritated at the slightest
provocation. He has just been released from prison after serving four years for manslaughter. He
had engaged himself in a fight that ended up with the death of a man as a result of an injury
caused by a shovel. After his release, he meets up with Jim Casy, a preacher whom he
remembers from his childhood and the two travel together.
As the story progresses, I get to learn that Tom and his family travel toward California in search
of greener pastures, while at the same time, he tries his level best to keep them together when

their grandfather dies along the road. In spite of the current happenings, the family has to
continue with their journey as they realize there's nothing much they can do.
Upon arrival in California, instances of oppression, as I had earlier mentioned, dawns on Tom
and his family. I can base my argument on the fact that the workers are exposed to extreme
working conditions even though their pay is minimal. When Tom tries to speak up, he ends up
being hushed, and others are hurt and arrested. Later on, during a scuffle at a camp, Tom gets in
an altercation with a police officer, and when the other officers arrive, Casy takes the blame for
stopping the officer, which leads to his arrest.
When Tom realizes that they could no longer continue working there, he tries to lead the family
further into the south, but they are later on stopped by people who claim to have had enough of
the Oklahoma exploitation. This upsets Tom as he feels he has lost an opportunity for his family.
After traveling for quite some time, the family finally reaches Weedpatch camp, a corruption-
free zone where he secures a job in a farmers association, which helps him support his family.
However, later on, the family leaves Weedpatch in search of much steadier jobs as Tom sets out
to find his friend Casy.
After a long search, Tom finally gets to meet up with Casy, who is now organizing striking the
peach picker. However, their short meeting is short-lived as a group of men approaches them
during the night, and one of them hits Casy with a pick handle, killing him instantly. This act
enrages Tom, and he ends up killing Casy's murderer before returning to his family. In fear that
he might be arrested, he flees as a fugitive, and his family is then forced to leave orchard to work
at a cotton farm.
