Research Title
The use of female restrooms of Gay individuals: Perception of senior
high school students
Background of the
Study
Note:
The LGBT is an acronym which commonly define as lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and transgender. With the many programs and policies of
the national government both in the Philippines and other countries, still
this group often experienced bullying, discrimination, and in some
cases, physical or sexual assault. These abuses even caused to curtail
the student’s rights and often ended to dropped out. These scenarios are
being observed mostly in the school especially in the secondary
institutions wherein students/youths’ present stage as adolescent are not
definitely identified which resulted to keep themselves the real them
rather than to come out and be true to what they feel and prefer for
themselves.
Discrimination is also an issue to the LGBT community. Many
schools both private and public do not observe and practice the Gender
and Development Equality which the government has created many
laws and policies not only for the equality of both men and women but
also for the LGBT community.
According to Gaell Jocelyn-Blackman (n.d.) there are types of
discrimination that LGBT community had experienced; discrimination
from society and their peers, and discrimination from home/families and

particularly schools. These discriminations which they endure had
affected them which resulted to high school drop outs because of the
discrimination they are faced with in the school atmosphere,
psychological impact on them, mainly because the physical abuse
followed constant verbal and non-physical harassment that was
overlooked by school officials, signs of depression such as:
“sleeplessness, excessive sleep, loss of appetite, and feeling of
hopelessness, and social and emotional impact on them that instead of
being social individuals, LGBT youths remain in the closet and hide.
Many researchers had been conducted to document and solve
the issues and problems generated to the LGBT discrimination which
contributed to the creation of the policies for the betterment of members
of the community.
On the study conducted by David Geyer (2017) he presented that
the LGBT community has overcome great obstacles in fighting for
equality which resulted to another that made the performance
particularly on mental has become poor. Through a qualitative research
he investigated analyzed to determine what factors contributed to his
(LGBT) overall positive experiences and mental health as a bisexual
student attending Boston Public Schools. Findings of the study that
support of both mothers and peers are positively affected the mental
health of the respondents while coming out or fear to come out to their
father and the absence of inclusion of school curriculum relevant to
LGBT advocacy has a negative effects. From the results, it was firmly
recommended by the researcher that school curriculum frameworks
should be updated to include LGBT units to provide all students,
heterosexual and otherwise, with an education that develops healthy
physical, mental, and emotional habits.
Another study on “LGBT Discrimination Research Report”
conducted by Calleja, Grech, lLepre. Knight, & Naudi (2011), they
concluded that despite of the occasional claim that the expectations of
the LGBT Community has increased expectation with respect to equal
treatment, they believe that there should be serious effort to advocate
and increase awareness relevant to the issue. With the use of different
interventions for the information campaign. And that LGBT people who
are placed in risk should also be addressed. Some of their
recommendations are material scope for legislation, personal scope of
legislation, equality body, ad hoc investigation, legal profession,
home/transphobic bullying in school and educational Establishment,
promotion of victim’ s right, same sex partnership, parental rights, and
amendment of legal documents.
