Introduction
Social media is a day to day activity. We are all guilty of it is almost the first and the last
thing we do upon waking up and going to bed. According to O'Keefe & Clarke-Pearson (2011),
social media is any web site where people can engage in social interactions and connect. Phones
have become an intriguing part of our daily lives that we can almost feel worthless without them
in our hands. We post about everything we do; WhatsApp status, Instagram story, YouTube
channels, Snapchat story, Twitter feed. Most of us depend on social media to meet friends, check
for news updates, meet potential clients for our hustles and even find ideas for our next start-ups.
As resourceful as it seems, is social media all positive?
Likes, retweets, subscriptions, twitter verifications, shares, many followers have all
brought about their sizeable amount of pressure. Berryman (2018) confirms that mental health
issues have been on the rise in the two decades. A sizeable number of parents, lawyers, and
policymakers have suggested that social media has contributed to the rise in mental health issues,
including depression, stress, and anxiety issues in young adults. Today's societal success bases
on Instagram followers, Twitter retweets, and how many likes you are likely to get when you
post a selfie having coffee at your nearby coffee shop.
Our media stations have also inclined to support this theory. The latest trend suggests that
you must possess a huge online fanbase to make it to a tv or radio station, no disrespect to the
journalism class. The success enjoyed by our 'mentors' has made us believe that the numbers
below their post define success other than our actual physical friends. We appreciate the friends
we have online than the people with whom we can share our problems. We are more
'independent.' We keep our problems to ourselves; sharing has been minimalized but instead
