Protein Energy Malnutrition is a condition where the body metabolises proteins for energy due to
energy deficiency. It is a condition common in children where they suffer from deficiency in
protein, energy and micronutrients.
Classification
Protein Energy Malnutrition portrays itself in the following forms
Marasmus
kwashiorkor
The two occur when an individual is suffering from malnutrition.
Pathophysiology
Marasmus
It is a chronic form of malnutrition
-It occurs when the body lacks enough energy giving nutrients. As a result, the muscles waste
and weaken. The body then starts to metabolize body proteins. In severe cases, the body
metabolises antibodies to provide amino acids for other uses. As a result, the body becomes
vulnerable to infections. Marasmus also leads to impaired brain development especially for
children below two years. This affects their learning abilities.
Marasmus also leads to slow metabolism hence low body temperature.

Kwashiorkor It is an acute form of malnutrition. In this stage of malnutrition, the proteins and hormones that previously maintained fluid balance are broken down to provide the body with energy. This makes the body fluids to leak in to the interstitial spaces leading to swelling of the limbs and belly. S ...
