INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR IN AN ORGANIZATION
CASE STUDY
I. Introduction
Organizational Behavior is a continuing leadership challenge. The
foundation discipline for managing people relates to human resource
management and faculty development in academic settings. In
management, administrators are challenged to balance the needs of
individuals and the expectations of the organization for the mutual benefit of
both. A primary goal of management is to lead and develop people and
manage the organization in alignment with the mission and vision of the
organization.
Absenteeism refers to unscheduled absences from work. Absenteeism
is costly to companies because of its unpredictable nature. When an
employee has an unscheduled absence from work, companies struggle to
find replacement workers at the last minute. This may involve hiring
contingent workers, having other employees work overtime, or scrambling
to cover for an absent coworker.

II. Background Information
In this case study, the problem of the principal was the uncountable
absents of one of the teachers. This teacher encountered family problem
that affected her performance in school. Since she is the ICT Coordinator,
a lot of paper works was assigned to her, though the job and coordinator
ship was distributed properly and evenly to the other teachers. It happened
that her husband was confined last May 2019. And her absences started to
increase from June until the end of this year. It also happened that the
principal gave a lot of alternative ways to help her, including letting her go
home earlier compared to the other teachers. The case presented here
involved managing conflicts in the part of the principal toward the teacher.
Due to frequent absences, some parents were already raising some
questions and remarks on the way the principal handle this. The conflict
centers on communication techniques including transparent communication
of the said teacher and the principal, open discussion of the problem to each
other, open confrontation, and active listening of the at fault teacher.
III. Alternatives
Management options such as accommodation of the problem,
negotiation, and collaboration are potential strategies for the principal to
resolve this issue. The principal wanted to show empathy and sympathy to
the teacher but has created conflicts between individuals and groups of
faculty members because all the teacher of that school was affected by the
issue and thought that the principal had favoritism.
