Before the Flood Movie & Laudato Si Reflection sheet
Directions: As we watch the 2016 documentary movie Before the Flood with Leonardo DiCaprio
use the questions below to analyze your thoughts. These are your personal thoughts, please make
sure your responses are detailed and provide explanations whenever possible. If you missed the

1.) Briefly describe your view on climate change. Is it real? Is it caused by human activity?
Be honest! I believe climate change is real and is caused by human activity. Human activities
like livestock farming and the burning of fossil fuels emit greenhouse gasses that influence the
earth’s climate and temperature. Greenhouse gasses trap sun rays, which increase the earth’s heat
and cause global
warming.
2.) Briefly describe the key pieces of evidence presented in the movie, supporting the
climate change argument. The evidence presented to support the climate change argument
includes the fact that Greenland has entered a feedback melting loop. While ice dispels sunlight,
water holds the heat and absorbs warmth. Water is slowly encroaching the city as more ice cover
turns into the water because of the heat caused by climate change. The sea level will rise by
several feet if Greenland melts. In the film, Dr Enric Sala likens Greenland to an air conditioning

system for the Northern part of the globe ("Before the Flood - Full Movie | National Geographic:
National Geographic: Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming: Internet Archive", 2021). When
the cooling system fades away, weather patterns would change making droughts more disastrous.
The movie also suggests that man-made climate change has made the earth warmer. This will
lead to severe storms, the collapse of entire ecosystems, and the collapse of industries. Within
three decades, the marine ecosystem has experienced a 50% loss of its coral ("Before the Flood -
Full Movie | National Geographic: National Geographic: Free Download, Borrow, and
Streaming: Internet Archive", 2021). The oceans absorb carbon dioxide and become warmer.
The warmth makes the oceans go through acidification, a process that increases the acidity of the
ocean water. This event inhibits the formation of coral reefs. The coral will vanish in a few
decades, reversing a thousand centuries of evolution. Coral reefs provide food for millions of
people around the world and sustain a wide range of species. Another key piece of evidence is
that millions of people prepare meals with biomass, mostly cow dung. Many people around the
world do not have access to electricity or alternate sources of heat. These people rely on cow
dung to generate heat ("Before the Flood - Full Movie | National Geographic: National
Geographic: Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming: Internet Archive", 2021). The film
suggests that putting all the millions of people on the electricity grid would harm the
environment unless the shift included sustainable
energy.
3.) Have any of your ideas involving global warming changed because of this film? Explain
why or why not and use examples from the movie! My ideas about global warming have
