Web Scraping
Introduction
Websites collect information on users who visit them. Such trails can provide invaluable
information that can be used to profile these visitors and generate business intelligence. Web
scraping provides a means of accessing data from websites launching extraction tools (Kenny,
2022). An understanding of how web scraping is actualized and the uses of the extracted data
would help us appreciate the importance of this undertaking.
Literature Review
What is Web Scraping?
Web scrapping describes the extraction of data from a website for further applications.
The collected data is exported into a more useful format that facilitates analysis and decision-
making applications. While data can be exported manually, the large-scale nature of website data
demands automation, which web scraping facilitates. Besides, web scraping software can extract
data from multiple pages within a short time and can be custom-built for a given site or
configured to extract data from any website of interest. Web scraping has become increasingly
important in the age of big data, whereby structured data is a source of business intelligence.
What it is used for and Types of Applications
Web scrapping allows access to structured website data. This data is resourceful and can
aid in the generation of smart decisions. The main applications of web scraping are price and
news monitoring, price intelligence, market research, and lead generation (Kenny, 2022). Web
scrapping makes it easy to gain knowledge of competitor pricing and implement a pricing
strategy that is cognizant of the competitive environment. Manufacturers can use extracted price
data to ascertain that retailers adhere to price guidelines and do not hurt business prospects.
