The Cask of Amontillado
Question 1
The story of “The Cask of Amontillado” is a horrific one that revolves around murder
and revenge, in which the Amontillado is of enormous significance. The Amontillado is a
fortified wine that plays a massive role in bringing out the story's horrific aspect. The author uses
the word cask to mean casket, therefore to imply the casket of Amontillado. The victim of
revenge, Montresor, plans on how to perform his revenge and figures out the individual he was
set to kill was a wine connoisseur named Fortunato. The element of murder, which takes the
majority of Poe's developing story, brings out the theme of horror in the story. Within the story,
the author describes how Montresors, the murderer, took the victim to a catacomb, an
underground passage containing remains of dead people. This element by itself reveals how the
story is deeply entangled with horrific scenes. In the catacomb, the presence of piled bones and
remains of dead people proves that a theme of horror was eminent. Additionally, still at the
catacombs, the story ends on a sad note where Montresor takes revenge by burying Fortunato
alive after giving him his favorite, the “Amontillado," which lured him into a niche where he was
strapped and buried alive, hence the title of the story "The Cask Of Amontillado."

Question 2
First, the story revolves around the aspect of revenge whereby Montresor had sworn to
kill Fortunato. From the story, the narrator explains how Fortunato had wronged him repeatedly
and could not take it anymore after he was insulted by him, then vowed to take revenge. This
aspect of revenge creates a horrific imagination whereby readers are left to wonder how the
revenge was schemed and how it would be carried out. According to Poe (57), he uses the trait of
anger in Montresor to reveal the burning desire to kill his oppressor. The theme of murder by
itself sends thrills whenever readers imagine it. How one had planned to take another person's
life in the story purposely arouses a horrific imagination.
When Montresor decided to execute his plan or revenge, he supposedly knew how to
exactly lure Fortunato into a trap by giving him his charm, the Amontillado, which he could not
resist. From the story, readers are made to understand that the murderer lured his friend by
promising him a barrel of wine at his home, knowing that he would come, and then he would
execute his revenge. To accomplish his plan flawlessly, Montresor had ordered his house
attendants to leave the house for the night and that he would return the following morning. This
portrays a deadly scheme that was set perfectly. The scene stirs up the imagination of a horrific
act that happened soon after the Fortunato was drunk. True to it, the author brings out the horror
in the story when Fortunato was finally trapped in an underground catacomb where he was
buried alive.
